Maggie Lloyd

I graduated from MIT in 2012 (Course 10B: Chemical-Biological Engineering) and am currently working in Washington, DC. Running has been a part of my life since middle school, and I competed for the varsity cross country and track teams during my four years at the Institute. I vividly remember the first time I volunteered for the Boston marathon my freshman year. My general impression as I walked around the marathon expo with all its booths and aisles and free samples was “this is NUTS!” Anyway, I now have four marathon volunteer jackets in my closet.

I knew I wanted to run this year’s marathon within a week of last year’s tragedy. On the day before registration for the 2014 Boston marathon opened, I qualified with a 3:29 finish at the Lehigh Valley Marathon. It wasn’t pretty, and I committed every rookie mistake out there, but I made it. One of my earliest running goals was to run the Boston marathon, and I still can’t believe that I am on my way to living that dream, but this race isn’t about checking something off my bucket list. I joined the MIT Strong team because Officer Collier has deeply inspired me to live a life of courage and friendship. I don’t have a lot of talents, but I hope my running can honor his legacy within the MIT community.

Right now my training is largely based on what I did in cross country, although sometimes I’m a rebel and pool run on Wednesdays instead of Thursdays. My goals for this race, in increasing order of importance, are to run sub-3:20 and to savor the experience. Once I get to Beacon Street it’ll be like just another reservoir run with my MIT cross country teammates.

Thank you for supporting this team of which I am so honored to be a member.
